Press Release
This new report commissioned by Ethical Corporation has been designed to provide intelligence for corporations on the most efficient, yet accurate, way of calculating and verifying their GHG emissions. As well as data on what companies themselves are doing and thinking, the report will cover current national and international government regulation and recommendations, and the opinion of key stakeholders - including prominent environmental NGOs and Environmental Social and Governance analysts.
Data will be collected from public sources such as company corporate responsibility reports and Carbon Disclosure Project 5 responses (not published in the CDP reports) and supplemented by in depth telephone discussions with key executives from representative companies across industry sectors.
Some of the key questions addressed include: Which companies are employing standard protocols to verify their absolute GHG emissions and their carbon efficiency - and what protocols are they employing; The relative and time and financial costs of implementing the various protocols; What methods and standards do investors and other stakeholders consider most valuable; Are companies employing third party auditors to verify methodology.
The report comes at a time when there’s increasing pressure for companies to report their emissions - and an increased demand for the use of comparable, standardized methodology. In the last month we’ve seen: The World Resource Institute and WBCSD sign an agreement with the ISO to work together to promote their respective GHG emissions protocols; A provision from Bali for “global sectoral agreements” on GHG emissions targets within industry sectors; A call from the Canadian environment minister for Canada’s 700 biggest polluters to be reporting on their GHG emissions within the next six months.
All of this suggests the need for more guidance on how companies should calculate and verify absolute GHG emissions, and the call for best practice sharing within and across sectors. Ethical Corporation’s report, due for publication in March 2008 will provide readers with both of the above - in the form of up to the minute data on current industry practice, national government perspectives, and stakeholders requirements.
