RI People & Appointments, December 10: Allianz Global Investors names ESG co-heads

The latest ESG movers and shakers

David Diamond and Bozena Jankowska have been named as Global Co-Heads of ESG at Allianz Global Investors, based in Paris and London respectively. Diamond was formerly Head of SRI at Allianz Global Investors Europe in France, which was previously the SRI business of AGF, the French insurer, before it was acquired by Allianz. He had been in the role since March 2010. Jankowska was formerly Global Head of Sustainability Research at RCM, the AGI subsidiary in London, although the RCM brand has now been dropped from the ESG business in tandem with a rebranding in Europe across the fund manager towards the AGI parent moniker.

The Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA), the Hong Kong-based non-profit body, is seeking a Research Director – China/Hong Kong. The position is full-time and will be based in ACGA’s Hong Kong office. Link

The new members of the board overseeing the AA1000 sustainability standards have been named. They are: Carol Adams, Global Director of Standards; Assheton Stewart Carter (Equitable Origin), Chair; Andrew Cave, Head of Group Sustainability, Royal Bank of Scotland; Beat Grüninger (BSD Consulting); Dongsoo Kim, Director of the Sustainability Management Center at the Korea Productivity Center; Alwin Kopse (Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels Association, Switzerland); Anant Nadkarni (Vice-President of Group Corporate Sustainability, TATA Industries); and Jennifer Seif (Executive Director for Fair Trade, Tourism South Africa).

Johan Cilliers has been named as Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa – and Managing Director of the new South Africa subsidiary – at NASDAQ-listed solar company First Solar. He will be based in First Solar’s new office in Cape Town and report to Christopher Burghardt, Vice President of Business Development for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). He joins from wind turbine company Suzlon.

The UK government has named the members to the Offshore Wind Programme Board, the industry-led group which aims to cut the cost of offshore wind energy. It is chaired by Adam Bruce, Global Head of Corporate Affairs at Mainstream Renewable Power. Members include representatives from developers, turbine manufacturers, supply chain, trade associations and public bodies. The full composition is here.The Coalition of Universities for Responsible Investing (CURI), which is working for responsible investment at Canadian universities, is recruiting for three management positions. The voluntary roles are: Research and Policy Director; Membership and Partnerships Director; and Organizational Development Director. CURI grew out of the 2nd UN PRI Academic Conference in Ottawa in 2009. Please apply by December 23.

Elias Masilela, the chief executive of South Africa’s Public Investment Corporation (PIC), has been appointed chair of the United Nations Global Compact local network (UNGC) South Africa, succeeding Futhi Mtoba, according to reports. PIC is the state-owned company which runs the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF).

Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, has received the German Sustainability Award from German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. Launched in 2008, the award recognizes actions by business to achieve high levels of environmental and social responsibility. Also receiving the award in the honorary category was former Mexican Foreign Minister and Chair of the Cancún World Climate Change Conference, Patricia Espinosa Castellano.

Benedito Braga, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, has been elected President of the World Water Council think tank. Braga, the former Director of the National Water Agency (ANA) of Brazil, takes over from Loic Fauchon at the Marseille, France-based organisation.

Don Green has been named as Vice President of Corporate Governance for US trade lobby group the Business Roundtable. He was most recently Legislative Director in the personal office of US Senator Olympia Snowe, the Maine Republican. Announcement
