As You Sow, the US-based shareholder advocacy foundation, is launching a new web platform to allow private investors to find out if the funds they hold are invested in fossil fuel companies – using data supplied by investment research giant Morningstar.
FossilFreeFunds.org is a free offering allowing users to “explore your own investments and compare funds to find the cleanest and greenest”.
“Fossil Free Funds will show you the fossil fuel companies hidden inside your mutual funds. Just type in a ticker or fund name and you’ll instantly see a listing of fossil companies in that fund,” the not-for-profit As You Sow says.
The service is being launched with a webinar later this month with Andrew Behar, CEO of As You Sow, Matthew Patsky, CEO of SRI firm Trillium Asset Management and Thomas Kuh, MSCI’s Global Head of ESG Indexes.Fossil Free Funds is available to all users at no charge and is funded by individual and foundation contributions to As You Sow.
“Fossil fuel investments carry real financial risks,” As You Sow says. “With Fossil Free Funds, you can look up mutual funds and see their exposure to various fossil fuel companies.” The new platform will use financial data provided by Morningstar, the investment data firm that last month teamed up with Sustainalytics on ESG ratings for global mutual funds and exchange traded funds.
Oakland, California-based As You Sow promotes environmental and social corporate responsibility through shareholder advocacy, coalition building, and “innovative legal strategies”. The webinar takes place at 2:00pm ET / 11:00am PT on September 15.
