We are delighted to announce that Carlos Tornero, Senior Reporter at Responsible Investor, has been awarded the Journalist of the Year (Investor Services) prize at the 2018 State Street Institutional Press Awards.
It’s the third time Carlos has won a State Street award, having won Journalist of the Year (Investment) last year and in the regulation category in 2014.
Responsible Investor Editor Daniel Brooksbank was short-listed in the Journalist of the Year (Investment) category. Carlos, who was also shortlisted in the investment, pensions and regulation categories, joined the team in 2016 from The Accountant magazine, where he was Editor.
Our Deputy Editor Sophie Robinson-Tillett won in 2015 for her coverage of passive investment in indexing.
Managing Editor Hugh Wheelan said: “Carlos has consistently written interesting and challenging stories for RI on topics as diverse and complex as the implications of the Western Sahara situation on mineral resources, fishing rights and renewables projects, down to whether the UN SDGs are a fad or a serious business and investment topic. The judges rightly recognised his probing, insightful journalism.”State Street, the US custody and asset management giant, has been organising the awards – which recognise outstanding performance in institutional financial services reporting — for 17 years.
Entries were judged by a panel of industry professionals led by Julian Marr, editor of Professional Adviser and Padraig Floyd, a veteran financial journalist. Other panelists included Malcolm McLean from Barnett Waddingham, CNBC Anchor Karen Tso, the PLSA’s Richard Butcher and freelance journalists Gill Wadsworth and Lynn Strongin Dodds.
“The awards continue to recognise exceptional journalism”
The journalists were honoured at a luncheon in London hosted by Liz Nolan, State Street’s chief executive officer for EMEA and Miles O’Connor, EMEA head of Institutional at State Street Global Advisors.
“We congratulate all shortlisted journalists and winners,” said Nolan. “With more than 140 entries submitted this year, the awards continue to recognise exceptional journalism and acknowledge the vital role that the press plays in providing information and a platform for opinion, education and debate.
