Responsible Investor retains publication of the year title at sustainability awards

RI praised for combining news, analysis and willingness to call out major firms as it wins Aviva Investors award for the second year running

Responsible Investor has been awarded Publication of the Year at the Aviva Investors Sustainability Media Awards for the second year running.

RI reporter Dominic Webb was shortlisted for the newcomer of the year award, which recognises outstanding journalists with fewer than two years of experience. Webb, who joined RI in January 2021, was commended by the judges for his quick grasp of the fixed income space.

The awards, which honour excellence in sustainability reporting across national, trade and specialist ESG press, were established last year. The judging panel was composed of Rhian-Mari Thomas, CEO of the Green Finance Institute; James Alexander, CEO of UKSIF; Sarah Gordon, CEO of the Impact Investing Institute; Mark Cobley, communications specialist at the PRI Association; Katie White, executive advocacy and campaigns at WWF; Emma Howard Boyd, former chair of the Environment Agency; and Steve Waygood, Aviva Investors’ chief responsible investment officer.

In his presentation speech, Waygood said that RI “continues to go from strength to strength” and praised its “laser focus” on sustainability and high-quality, groundbreaking editorial content.

Waygood noted that RI has published content and comment from the industry’s biggest hitters all the way to government ministers. He highlighted RI‘s investigation of the red flags surrounding Thai sugar company Mitr Phol, which was given a top sustainability award by S&P, noting that the coverage “particularly stood out as it shows how the publication is not afraid to call out major firms, and does not give up on its quest to promote greater responsibility in the investment industry”.

RI‘s editor, Lucy Fitzgeorge-Parker, said she was “extremely proud” of the editorial team.

“In a year of internal change, they have consistently delivered high-quality coverage of the key issues in sustainable finance, from regulation and disclosure to biodiversity and human rights,” she said. “They have maintained the high standards and integrity for which RI has always been known. It has been a great privilege to join such a talented and motivated team, and I look forward to building on the work that they have put in over the past year.”

RI affiliate publication Infrastructure Investor picked up Real Assets Publication of the Year, while the editor of sister publication New Private Markets, Toby Mitchenall, was highly commended in the Editor of the Year category.
