RI People & Appointments, August 29: Canadian fund giant BCIMC seeks Shareholder Engagement Manager

The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, the C$86.9bn (€61.1bn) Canadian pension giant, is seeking a Manager, Shareholder Engagement. “In this influential role, you’ll encourage companies and financial markets to adopt environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards designed to enhance returns and mitigate risks within bcIMC’s client investment portfolios,” the job ad states. Raj Thamotheram, former Senior Advisor for Responsible Investment at AXA Investment Managers has launched a new ESG consultancy firm for institutional investors, Raj Thamotheram Associates. Thamotheram left Axa in June this year and was previously a Senior Advisor for responsible investment at the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

Arthur Weinbach is to step down as chairman of proxy voting infrastructure firm Broadridge Financial Solutions, as of its forthcoming annual meeting. The board will elect an independent Chairman from among its members before the meeting, likely to take place in November. Link

Heath Mottram, head of investment and actuarial at the £27.6bn (€31.2bn) Royal Mail Pension Plan, is to leave at the end of October. He will be replaced by Ian McKnight, currently investment strategy manager according to a Financial News report. The departure comes as the UN Principles for Responsible Investment signatory begins to wind downs its investment operations as the sponsor is part-privatised.

Matti Leppälä has been named to succeed Chris Verhaegen as Secretary General of the European Federation for Retirement Provision, the pension lobby group. Leppälä is Director – International, Investment and Legal Affairs at the Finnish Pension Alliance TELA. Verhaegen has been appointed chair of the EIOPA Occupational Pensions Stakeholder Group. Jacob de Wit has been appointed Chairman of the Board of SNS Asset Management, the Dutch funds firm and UN PRI signatory with €42bn in assets under managements. He takes over from interim chairman Dick Okhuijsen. De Wit joins from F&C Asset Management, where he has been Head of Fixed Income.Craig Neyman, Chief Investment Officer at $4bn conservation organization the Nature Conservancy, is to join the David and Lucile Packard Foundation as Chief Financial Officer. Mark Thomsen has been named Director of Business Development for OneReport, the online corporate responsibility information tool, by SRI World Group. OneReport, which Thomsen helped to develop, integrates the metrics requested by responsible and mainstream investment research and ratings organizations, as well as corporate responsibility frameworks and standards. Michael Gray, Vice President, ESG, Research Business Manager at MSCI, has left the company.

Sylvia Mathews Burwell, President of the Global Development Program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is stepping down. She was the foundation’s Chief Operating Officer from 2001 to 2006, and took up her current role five years ago. Announcement

Julian Curtis has joined Generation Investment Management, the sustainable funds firm co-founded by Al Gore, as a partner in its London office. He joins from Mizuho Corporate Bank, where he was head of origination for the international acquisition finance division.

Innes McKeand has been named to the new role of head of equities at A$42bn (€30.6bn) UN PRI signatory AustralianSuper. He joins from Aegon Asset Management in the UK and will report to Chief Investment Officer Mark Delaney.

The UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment has advertised a vacancy for a Public Policy Manager. The role is to “foster dialogue with and among governments and regulators to promote policy environments and market- based frameworks that support and encourage responsible investment”.
