The pension funds of ABP, Folksam and Folketrygdfondet have emerged as winners in their categories at the RI Reporting Awards in London today, held at the annual RI Europe event.
The awards – now in their second year – showcase excellence in responsible investment and ESG reporting, encouraging best practice and transparency by recognising the highest standards in the disclosure of responsible investment activities by asset owners globally.
ABP, the giant Dutch civil service fund, and Swedish insurer Folksam were joint winners of the Best RI Report by a Large Fund category. The Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and the Government Employees Pension Fund of South Africa were both commended in this category.
Folketrygdfondet, which runs the assets of the Government Pension Fund Norway for the Norwegian government, was named Best RI Report by a Medium & Small Fund, with Canada’s Bâtirente and Fonds de solidarité FTQ both winning commendations.
The awards were adjudicated by a high-level panel including former Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Executive Director James Gifford.
Other judges were Andreas Hoepner of the Henley Business School, Marcel Jeucken, Head of Responsible Investment at PGGM Investments (which won the Large Fund award in 2013), Steve Lydenberg, Partner at Domini Social Investments, Dawn Turner, Head of Environmental Finance and Pension Fund Management at the Environment Agency Pension Fund (winners of the best Medium & Small Fund award last year), Responsible Investor’s Hugh Wheelan, and Helene Winch, Director of Policy and Research at the PRI.
As previous winners, PGGM and the Environment Agency were invited to join the judging panel in 2014 and were therefore precluded from participating. The awards are based on proprietary research of more than 1,000 funds around the world to create a pool of RI reports to which a series of objective indicators are applied to filter the reports. The RI Reporting Awards are organised by Responsible Investor in association with research partner the Responsible Finance Research Charity.
