We are proud to announce that Carlos Tornero, Senior Reporter at Responsible Investor, has been awarded the Journalist of the Year (Investment) prize at the 2017 State Street Institutional Press Awards.

State Street, the US custody and asset management giant, has been organising the awards – which recognise outstanding performance in institutional financial services reporting — for 16 years. There were more than 150 entries and the winners were announced at a ceremony in London yesterday.

They awards were judged by a panel headed by Julian Marr, editor of Professional Adviser, and Padraig Floyd, the veteran financial journalist. Other judges were journalists Gill Wadsworth, Karen Tso and Lynn Strongin Dodds as well as former Pensions Advisory Service head Malcolm McLean and Lindsay Tomlinson, the former National Association of Pension Funds chair who is on the board at Legal & General Investment Management.

Carlos, who contributes to both RI.com and ESG Magazine, joined the team in 2016 from The Accountant magazine, where he was Editor.

His winning submissions included an interview with former California State Treasurer Phil Angelides and coverage of a shareholder resolution at Shell from campaign group Follow This.A Spanish national, Carlos had earlier won in 2014 in the regulation category. Deputy Editor Sophie Robinson-Tillett won in 2015 for her coverage of passive investment in indexing. Managing Editor and Co-Founder Hugh Wheelan is a recipient of awards from Aon Consulting, PIRC the Asian Sustainable Finance Association.

Hugh Wheelan said: “I am delighted for Carlos and the rest of the team. Responsible Investor goes from strength to strength and it’s worth noting that the award is for investment, not ‘responsible’ investment – a testament not just to our reporting but to how far the sector has come.

“In an era of ‘fake news’ these awards are more important than ever as the industry goes through a period of profound change. Responsible Investor is justifiably proud to be a trusted source of information.”

Rajen Shah, State Street’s head of Global Markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: “The awards continue to recognize great journalism and acknowledge the vital role that the press plays in providing information and a platform for education and debate.”
